those who know me may have heard of my 'obsession' for this franchise. I havent updated my journal in ages, so i figured i might as well elaborate on this, and hopefully find some others who share this obsession.
When digimon originally came out, i must have been in about year 4. there were many crazes that swept the school. Marbles, bey blades, and even yo-yo's. Digimon was one of them. the TV series was a favorite of mine, and still is. the idea of having your own digital monster as your best friend, and digivolving and adventuring in the digital world was simply magical, and I guess my love of it has only grown.
At school most kids got one of the tamagochi style digimon pets (V-pets I later found otu they were called). it was so much fun to look after these little guys, hide them when they went off in class, and battle them in the playground at recess and lunch.
I remember that one time, i had only what i thought was a Gabumon. stupidly, I challenged an other kid to a battle, and my opponent was a Scullgreymon. after the battle, I checked the V-pet, and gabumon was stone cold dead from the fight. a gross tactical error on my part
as all crazes did, it became harder and harder to find opponents. i grew tired of the game like everyone else, but every few months, i would still reactivate my digimon and play with them, try to keep them alive as long as possible. I ended up acquiring three V-pets, so i could battle them amongst each other to let them digivolve.
in terms of the TV shows, like sci-fi shows, i find it hard to completly hate any of them. Season 1 was the original, and had Wargreymon, one of the msot awesome things to come out of japan. the original story of Tai and the group was great. the continuation of it in the second series was not as good, it still fun with the different flavors of digivolution.
season 3 was probably my favorite, because it was just what i always dreamed of at that time, making ym own digimon partner. season 4 was allot different from the others, but was the only one i watched froms tart to finish on its original run, so i got more fo the story than the others.
I haven't seen season 5 yet, and i'm not looking forward to it. having watched both the dub and Japanese versions of the digimon movies, i infinitely prefer Digimon: the movie to the original three Japanese movies, but i hear that the dub for season 5 did the opposite of what i would have wanted. a more mature digimon series sounds just like what i would have wanted, but a dub which tries to bring it back down doesn't sound nice. it is one of the main arguments i have for learning Japanese.
season 6 sounds quite frankly like its lost the plot, with a sort of weird power rangers megazord thing. but like i said, after i watch it i might have a hard time hating it, so we'll see
but fast forwarding to the present, I've now got this amazing tool at my disposal, the internet. that along with the independence of my city's public transport system, ebay, and money (almost a distant memory at this unemployed moment
) i was able to find and buy all sorts of geeky items. naturally, after finding transformer toys, cool T-shirts, outdated computer games, comics and all manner of stuffed toys related to obscure interests I've found, I thought "surely digimon would be amongst them".
but to this day, the only piece of digimon merchandise I've found in a shop, is digimon trading cards at a little out of the way card shop in the city. devastated, i seem have taken it upon me to preserve whats left of this franchise in Australia.
i guess the reason why i love it so much was the sense of community that was there. all this extra content that was added after i left the franchise sounds incredible, like the battle terminals in japanese arcades that can interface with digimon v-pets. it sounds like the ultimate game, where you can plug in your pet to a terminal at an arcade, battle with others as you see them, or supplement it with a card game.
now that i can get the series off the internet, re-watching them seems like i can almost recapture what i felt as a kid. it almost works, but i feel sad that such a franchise can die out. of course i'm sure it happens all the time with the rate these things come out, but digimon will always hold a very special place in my heart.
as soon and i'm reemployed, ebay will be practicaly drained of digimon merch if i have my way
also, if anyone still plays the digimon original card game, i would be very interested in contacting you. I've been slowly assembling a deck through booster packs, but an opponent still eludes me.
