Description

Note: this is the website i mention these drawings are from [link] check it out!

Ok, I've been working on this for a while now. i guess it started when i submitted the original Battle star Poseidon drawings (I've deleted them, don’t bother looking). Fongsaunder told me that tie image of the Galactica, drawn by Wolfsshipyards.mystarship.com was now outdated, and I should revise it.
Then, far more recently, I was trying to draw the Poseidon on pencil and paper, and was getting really frustrated because the weird positions of the flight pods was hard to do, and mostly, very annoying. Also, the design didn’t seem to make much sense now, from a tactical and realistic perspective.
So, a revision was in order. I took the newer, revised battle star Galactica drawn on the site, and later the war star that is also on the site (that’s where the cannon is from) and begun drawing.
I actually started with the Battle star Acropolis [link] , and from finishing that, got the idea and shapes needed to do this one. It was a lot harder than the acropolis, because more detail was needed.
This is the most complete 'deck plan' I've done, a top and side view, complete with a top view of the flight pods retracted!
I did the Nameplates in Paint.NET, and I’m not sure if I'll still do it with it, they seem a bit too fuzzy. What do you think?
All in all, a good couple of hours over a few weeks was wasted putting this together, and I’m proud of the result. it also means I'll have to change a few points in the story I’m writing, primarily because the flight pods don’t seal anymore.

Story
The Poseidon’s beginnings lie way back to colonial ship building strategy. Before the advent of the battle star, the colonial fleet was divided into carriers and battleships. Neither could perform the others role effectively, and both were needed in the war. A carrier could have hundreds of fighters and send them into an attack at long range. The fighters could then protect a battleship from fighters, whilst it attacks the heavier ships.
With the battle star there was a middle ground between the two, and as the war progressed, Combat stars and Assaulters and War stars came into service, filling in the room between the Battle star and battleship.
On the other end of the spectrum, the carriers were right off on their own. There were various sized of carriers, ranging from 20 fighters to over 200, but their closest relative was the battle star.
If a carrier was jumped without an escort by a base star, it was doomed unless it jumped away. Most could not survive an onslaught from a base star for very long. A mid ground was needed.
About three quarters of the way through the Cylon war, ' Project Poseidon ' was initiated. It chose BSG-25 to be a part of it. The Battle star Hathor, the flagship of the fleet, was due for a massive repair, and so it was pulled off duty, repaired, and send to the CRSD (Colonial Research Space Dock).
For about two years it stayed there, and Project Poseidon advanced, the Cylon war happening all around it. After months, the Hathor was taken off the project, and was declared fit for active duty.
What happened next has been the subject of much controversy. The Hathor had been reportedly released form the testing station, and had made its way to regroup with the Light star Hermes-A. On its way there, it was jumped by the Cylons, and destroyed.
A few days after the loss was reported, a small civilian fleet, headed by members of the dead crew’s families, escorted by mercenaries, set off to the Hathor’s last reported location. When they got there, they found hundreds of bodies that had been flushed out into space, but no remains of any battle star. A colonial War star jumped into the area and escorted the fleet away. This story of the civilian fleet is even regarded to most as purely rumours, and that no actual fleet even left to the area. The colonial navy would later deny ever having a war star in that sector at the time.
Weeks after the Cylon war, the product of Project Poseidon, the Poseidon-class battle star, was nearly complete. Originally a half way point between a carrier and a battle star, its mission profile had changed to include anti-Cylon abilities. The ship was fitted with enlarged port and starboard flight pods, as well as ventral and dorsal flight pods. It had almost as many guns as a Galactica-class battle star, but also had a massive cannon mounted on the bow of the ship that was designed to puncture any Cylon built armour. It was equipped with the best computer systems of the day that could resist Cylon hacking, as well as MKII and MKIV vipers. It had numerous countermeasures that effected Cylon communication and targeting, and was just as fast as a Columbia-class battle star.
It was now designated as a ‘Carrier/Anti-Cylon incursion hybrid’ ship.
The Battle star Poseidon was commissioned, and 11 more of tis class were constructed, one for each colony. The Acropolis, the Poseidon’s sister ship, joined its sister in BSG-25. They served together, running patrols of the Red line for Cylon activity for decades. They would often make check ups on the Cylon-colonial armistice station, and there would always be nothing there.
Late in their service, the Acropolis was changed to BSG-63, and it now wore a brown coat of paint over tis once orange stripes. The ships occasionally swapped crews, but were separated.
After about 30 years of service, a refit was needed. The Acropolis volunteered to be serviced first. The program included a new shell of armour, removal of the bow cannon, replacing it with the batteries on the future Mercury-class battle star, increased DRADIS range, and more sensitive sensors. The cannons would also be upgraded slightly, and the anti fighter guns would have a greater degree of autonomy.
The Acropolis finished its refit, and very soon was back on duty. The Poseidon was next, but there was a problem. Due to shrinking battle star numbers, it was the flagship of BSG-25, and was needed. A compromise was set, to have the refit done on the job, but it would take a lot longer. After two months of on the job works, it would be dry-docked for another three months for the more serious modifications.
In the last ten years, Poseidon-class ships were being retired and decommissioned. Four years until the 40th anniversary of the Cylon war there were only three Poseidon-classes left. A replacement was created, and the project ended in the Celestial-class battle star. The ship was smaller than the podedema, cheaper, used less manpower, was more automated, had equal weapons, and its hull was shaped to reduce DRADIS signatures enough to be tactically effective. The only thing it lacked was a massive fighter compliment, but it had still more than any battle star of its size.
The Minotaur, the second ship, was send into BSG-25, and was to replace the Poseidon in five years. A large publicity event was held when the Poseidon and the Minotaur flew side by side, and there were a few historic photographs taken.
On the day of the attack, the Poseidon was on a supply route to rondevu with the Battle star Atlanta. When word of the attack came, the Poseidon was one of the first to respond to the Atlanta’s call for a counter attack. When the Poseidon joined the large fleet that was massed there, it took part in possibly the largest of many desperate battles to repel the cylons form the colonies.
There Poseidon fought with honour. What it didn’t get to do in the Cylon war, it did here...

The rest of the story will be in ‘Battlestar Poseidon’.

i love the modular design aesthetics of BSG.
